Erik Spiekermann (1947–) is the author and cover designer of Stop Stealing Sheep & Find Out How Type Works, as well as the third edition’s layout designer and typesetter alongside graphic designer Ferdinand Ulrich. Spiekermann is a German graphic designer known for his type design, like FF Unit, FF Info, and FF Meta, as well as for his books and articles on type.
In Stop Stealing Sheep & Find Out How Type Works, he discusses typography, its history, functions, and how to manage the relationship between type and space/layout to ensure clear communication and visual aesthetics. The third edition offers a wide array of visual examples, including photos, fonts, and illustrations, and specifically discusses type in mobile and web context.
Stop Stealing Sheep & Find Out How Type Works primarily uses typefaces Equity and FF Unit. Typeface designer of Equity, Matthew Butterick (1970–), made adjustments to the already established font for the use of this book.
The sheep character on the front cover was drawn by Chuck Anderson.
